Villebois-Lavalette

10 minute drive. This is an old historic town with a 'hilltop' castle rising above the countryside and is one of the major historic sites in the Charente. Guided tours are available during the summer months for both the Castle and the village.

Mareuil Château

10 minute drive. This is a flamboyant gothic style Château, quite different to a lot of other Châteaux in the area. The current proprietors offer guided tours in 3 different languages and are open from 1st April ~ 15th November.

Brantôme

22 minute drive. Brantôme is described as the 'Venice of the Perigord'. It is renowned for it's rich cultural heritage such as the Benedictine Abbey. Cafes and Restaurants are scattered around this pretty town as well as the shops in the heart of the town and also those which are built into and under the rock face. There is a market every Friday morning. For more adventurous people, Kayaking is very popular in Brantôme and is available everyday from 1st April ~ 30th September.

Grotte de Villars

35 minutes drive. These caves are well worth a visit. They introduce you to the magical world of water and time. It is the largest underground network in the Perigord where the river has hollowed out huge chambers. They are open everyday from 1st April ~ 11th November.

Bourdeilles

35 minutes drive. Bourdeilles is a lovely village on the edge of the River Dronne. It boasts a Chateau, a Mill and a Medieval centre. There are a couple of cafes where you can sit and watch the world go by. There is also a market every Sunday morning. The Chateau is open for visits from 1st April ~ 31st December.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne

35 minutes drive. Aubeterre is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It's centre is a lovely square filled with shops, artists workshops, bars and restaurants. It is also home to a Subterannean Church.....the largest in Europe and the tallest in the World! The church is open everyday except Christmas and New Years Day.

Angoulême

32 mins drive. Famous for it's Comic Strip Festival and the Painted Wall Trail

Périgueux

50 mins drive. Capital of the Dordogne. It contains an interesting medieval and renaissance centre with attractive Boulevards and streets lined with Medieval houses to explore.

Bergerac

1hr 15mins drive. The Dordogne river flows through this beautiful town with many places of interest to visit.

Saint-Émilion

1hr 26 mins drive. A Medieval village named after Emilion, a Benedictine Monk. This town is steeped in history and of course very famous for its wine!

Bordeaux

1hr 45mins. Bordeaux is a Port City on the River Garonne and has the highest number of preserved historical buildings in France (after Paris)
